The Daikonyaki students soon caught up with the pair, and had every intention of killing them both Yukichi for the earlier humiliation, and Usagi for the bounty. That man turned out to be Usagi's father, and that's when the two of them realized that they were cousins. Yukichi went on to inform Usagi how his own mother's brother was the headman of a village in the Northern who was killed by Lord Hikiji for defying him. When Yukichi inquired about it, Usagi told how he had earlier thwarted an assassination attempt on a Shogun emissary by Mifune loyalists, but had to flee the province because he was still loyal to Lord Mifune and Hikiji would be after him. At their sensei's urging, Takao resolved to track the two rabbits down before they left town in order kill them to save face.Īs Yukichi and Usagi made their way out of town, the two of them came across a bounty post that stated that Lord Hikiji was calling for the death of any Mifune loyalist wearing the Mifune kamon, which Usagi wears. When the head instructor of the Daikonyaki school, Takao, learned of the students' defeat, he punished them for shamming their school's name by losing not only to their dojo's rival but also to a nameless ronin, and became determined to erase their humiliation. Usagi and Yukichi deftly defeated the students without even drawing their swords, and allowed the group to leave in terror. They tried bullying Yukichi into handing over his sensei's sword but when he refused, the Daikonyaki students tried attacking the pair and take the sword for themselves. When they stopped at a nearby inn, they ran afoul of a group of students from the Daikonyaki School, a rival to the Itsuki-dojo, looking to harass the two rabbit wanderers for trespassing through their territory. After reminding Usagi of their initial encounter and informing him of his quest for his sensei, the two of them decided to travel together. However, Itsuki eventually succumbed to his age, but before he died, he tasked Yukichi with delivering his katana to his nephew, Daido, his only living relative who would succeed him as master of the school.Īs Yukichi was carrying out his sensei's dying wish, he happened to be walking along the same road as Usagi while he was leaving the Northern Province and recognized him immediately. Eventually, Yukichi achieved his ambition and rose to become head instructor of Itsuki's dojo. Years passed by and Yukichi continued his training under Itsuki, but always carried that twig as a reminder of how his arrogance caused him to fail his master. The sensei then insisted on meeting with this ronin and ordered Yukichi to go find him, but by the time he had gotten to the inn, Usagi was already long gone. The swordmaster quickly scolded Yukichi for being unable to tell that the twig had been cut by an expert but not one from any of the traditional schools. Yukichi answered that a vagabond samurai with the intent of meeting the sensei had cut the twig to demonstrate his skill, but Yukichi had dismissed him as being too unimportant for the likes of Itsuki. As the two of them walked the garden, Itsuki noticed the twig Yukichi had tossed away earlier and asked who had cut it. Later that night, Itsuki-Sensei went out to the courtyard as Yukichi was finishing his kata and complimented the student on his diligence. Dumbfounded by the gesture of a mere twig, Yukichi discarded it and brushed off Usagi as a crazy ronin. Usagi told him that his sensei was the mountain hermit Katsuichi, then he cut a twig off a nearby tree branch and asked Yukichi to present it to Itsuki-Sensei as proof of his credentials, then left for the inn he was staying at. Yukichi insisted that his sensei was too important to see just any wanderer and that he was resting, then asked for the name of Usagi's school and credentials. Usagi had heard of Sensei Itsuki's reputation and wished to pay his respects. During his novice years one day, while practicing his kata, Yukichi was surprised to receive a visit by an unknown ronin by the name of Miyamoto Usagi. The swords Yukichi wields originally belonged to the school, but since he used them so much his sensei declared they were his. Not much is known of Yukichi's past, except that he grew up and trained diligently at a highly regarded dojo under the tutelage of Sensei Itsuki. It was through taking this journey that Yukichi happened upon Miyamoto Usagi and now travels with him. His first real journey out into the world was to fulfill the dying wish of his sensei. Yamamoto Yukichi (山本雪吉) is a young samurai and former student of a prestigious school under a renowned master, along with being an anthropomorphic rabbit.
